How to find a sports agent?

The main reason for athletes to get an agent is to represent and assist them with their athletic career. An agent can help them secure the right contracts and endorsement deals. However, agents do so much more than just finding opportunities for their clients. They sacrifice a lot of their personal time, and make sure to fill whatever role is missing from a clients life. Agents allow their clients to focus on their performance, while they take care of the rest.

If you are an athlete looking for team tryouts, or if you are a coach who is ready to lead a new team, a certified sports agent may have all the contacts you need to get you in the right place. But it’s not always easy to find a qualified agent that has your best interest in mind. Therefore, we will share with you a few tips on how to find a sports agent.

Word of Mouth

The easiest way to find an agent is to ask fellow athletes or other people that you know who have or have worked with an agent. Athletes like to recommend their agent to other athletes especially if they have had a good experience. Ask around to see who is working with who and how they like it.

Utilize school resources

In case you’re still in school it’s important to use your school resources. Most colleges keep an agent directory and require agents to register with their school’s Compliance office in order to protect their students, and to make sure that the agent is qualified and in good standing with its professional organization.

Use databases

Use professional sports league agent databases. The big leagues keep an agent database for their certified agents usually on that leagues perspective players’ association website. Athletes can search the databases and learn a little bit about any agent before contacting them. Examples of sports league agent databases are:

Don’t do businesses with agents unless they are certified. However, just because an agent is listed in the database, doesn’t mean he/she is the right match for you.

Perform a background check

It’s important to look up the agent and perform a background check before reaching out to them. Look for a business email, website, and a LinkedIn. Make sure the agent is, or at least looks reliable. If they are, they will have no problem with you investigating them.

Reach out to more than one agent

There are many agents out there that try to convince you to sign with them by offering you money or other incentives. Our advice is simple: don’t just sign with the first agent you talk to. Make sure to have a Zoom or Skype call with several agents and ask as many questions as possible.

You want to find an honest and trust-worthy person. You need someone you can rely on and you need to be 100% comfortable with the agent you are choosing. This is going to be the person to represent you and has the power to make or break your career. So don’t be afraid to take the time to get to know different agents, and make sure to know who they are as both a person and a business(wo)man.
